William "Billy" Payne (1833-1927) was
born into slavery at Stratford. Family tradition is that he descended
from slaves owned by Thomas Lee and possibly from a slave named Wesley
who was listed in
Philip
Ludwell Lee's 1782 estate inventory. This picture was taken in
1926 by National Park Service photographers. |
